PREP/COGENT/MATHS
1 PREP, COGENT, and PASS-based Math programs by Dr. J.P. Das
Watch legendary Dr. J.P. Das
We feel truly honored to have learned from the legendary Dr. J.P. Das, whose pioneering work in Cognitive Assessment and Enhancement has inspired educators and psychologists across the world.
BVerve hosting the International Seminar and Workshop (Feb 2016) was a memorable opportunity to gain insights directly from his vast knowledge and research.
His teachings continue to guide our work and remind us of the power of thoughtful learning and meaningful education.
2. The Pass Reading Enhancement Program (PREP) builds the thinking muscles behind learning!
🎥 Watch A.R. Luria’s PASS model Not just reading—it's brain training! Rooted in A.R. Luria’s PASS model, PREP, helps us understand how our brain Receives, Processes and Acts on information & stimuli.
PASS stands for:
- P – Planning
- A – Attention
- S – Simultaneous Processing
- S – Successive Processing
What Else?
Developing Core Cognitive Skills:
- Visual-Spatial Relationships
- Classification & Discrimination
- Critical Thinking
- Problem Solving
- Decision Making
PASS-Based Cognitive & Academic Enhancement Programs
Developed by Dr. J. P. Das
We implement research-based programs grounded in the PASS Theory of Intelligence to strengthen the cognitive processes that support reading, language, and mathematics. These programs focus on how children think and process information, rather than rote learning.
PREP – PASS Reading Enhancement Program
PREP is a remedial reading comprehension program designed for primary school-aged children experiencing difficulties with reading, spelling, and comprehension. It is based on widely accepted theories of child development and cognitive processing.
Why Is It Called PREP?
PREP stands for PASS Reading Enhancement Program, based on the PASS model of intelligence:
- P – Planning: Monitoring, checking, predicting
- A – Attention: Sustaining focus and resisting distraction
- S – Simultaneous Processing: Understanding and integrating information
- S – Successive Processing: Sequential decoding of words and sounds
Program Structure
PREP consists of:
- 4 Successive Processing Modules
- 4 Simultaneous Processing Modules
Each module includes:
- Global (non-reading) tasks that strengthen core cognitive strategies
- Bridging tasks that apply the same strategies to reading and spelling
How PREP Is Delivered
- Implemented by a trained facilitator
- Can be conducted one-to-one or in small groups (up to 4 students)
- Suitable for classroom or remedial settings
Successive Processing Activities
- Joining Shapes: Connecting shapes in a sequence
- Connecting Letters: Tracing coloured paths between letters
- Related Memory: Matching parts of pictures (e.g., animals)
- Window Sequencing: Reproducing sequences of coloured chips
Simultaneous Processing Activities
- Tracking: Locating symbols using maps and tracking cards
- Shapes and Objects: Categorising objects into abstract shapes
- Shape Design: Reproducing visual designs from memory
- Sentence Verification: Matching passages to pictures
COGENT – Cognitive Enhancement Program
COGENT is a child-focused cognitive and literacy development program designed for children aged 4 to 7 years, including those with typical and atypical developmental histories.
The program strengthens:
- Cognition
- Phonological awareness
- Language development
- Literacy-related school readiness skills
COGENT uses hands-on, play-based activities involving shapes, pictures, and toys to build strong links between language, comprehension, and thinking skills.
The Five Modules of COGENT
Module 1: Squeeze and Say
- Follows increasingly complex instructions
- Improves attention, perceptual discrimination, and metalinguistic skills
Module 2: Clap and Listen
- Focuses on phonological awareness and working memory
- Improves sound discrimination
Module 3: Funny Relatives
- Understands actions and relationships in sentences
- Strengthens language comprehension and spatial understanding
Module 4: Name Game
- Discriminates onsets and rimes
- Builds phonological awareness and working memory, preparing for spelling
Module 5: Shapes, Colours and Letters
- Rapid naming of shapes, colours, objects, and letters
- Improves naming speed and early literacy skills
PASS-Based Math Program
The Math Program focuses on building conceptual understanding of mathematics, rather than rote memorisation or drill-based learning.
The program recognises that early mathematical understanding exists naturally, even in infants—such as estimating quantity, size, and value.
Core Math Skills Targeted
- Size and value concepts
- Number line understanding
- Numerosity (counting and quantity)
- Verbal and non-verbal simultaneous processing Working memory
Structure of Each Math Module
Each module includes:
- Size and value concepts
- An introduction and conceptual discussion
- Structured activities that train underlying cognitive operations
- Tasks designed to reveal and strengthen the cognitive foundation for math concepts
The goal is to help children understand mathematical procedures and concepts, rather than memorising them.
Strengthening Thinking to Improve Learning
At BVerve, PREP, COGENT, and PASS-based Math programs are used as part of an integrated intervention plan to build strong cognitive foundations for reading, language, and mathematics.
